SoCon12: My First Foray Into Adulthood

After 24 years, I think I’ve finally passed into adulthood. It happened this past Saturday when I voluntarily woke up at 6 a.m. to attend a conference for my job.

The conference was called So Connected or SoCon12 for short and it was held at Kennesaw State University and was a basically a field day (minus the sack races and water balloon tosses) for social media nerds.

The True Form of Paula Deen

Thanks to a link on Facebook posted by my old SCAD buddy, Josh Buckner, I have found another tool that my archnemesis is using to woo innocent people into her clutches.

Those who know me know of my long-standing fear and loathing of the she-devil that is Paula Deen.

The Wordpress Challenge

Since I started this blog back in the Fall of 2009 for a Writing for the Web class at SCAD, I have found that the more I post, the more creative I get and the better I feel.

That is why, as one of my New Year’s resolutions, I have chosen to participate in the WordPress PostAWeek2011 challenge. This particular program encourages bloggers to write a new post once a week every week this year. I plan on pushing myself to post at least two or three times a week.

Another thing that keeps me blogging is feedback from my readers. I love getting comments from people, whether they are positive or negative. If something I write pisses you off, let me know! If something is funny, tell me!

Happy New Year to everyone and if you haven’t started your own blog yet, now is the time!

Fat-tastic

Everyone says America is the fattest country. I can’t imagine why.

I say screw that measly salad! Get your blood pressure pills ready and unbutton your pants, because I’m going to take you on a journey through the fattest of the fat.

The Cowboy Cafe Barnyard: Two 1/2 pound beef patties, pulled pork BBQ, bacon, 2 slices of cheddar cheese and a fried egg.

Bacon-wrapped Totinos pizza rolls

Corndog Eggroll

Ravioli stuffed with barbecued rib meat and mashed potatoes, sour cream, bacon and chives, all topped with melted cheddar, bacon, cheese sauce, green onions and shredded cheese.

I borrowed all of these images from my new favorite Web site, ThisIsWhyYou’reFat.com. Isn’t it funny how some things can make you extremely grossed out, but also strangely hungry at the same time? In the spirit of being fat, I dug up some old photos of creations made at Fat Wednesday–a family tradition that began at Robbie Ripoll‘s house more than three years ago. Here’s what I found:

An 8 lb. turkey burger in the making

Although I wasn’t at this particular Fat Wednesday (thanks  SCAD), Oz updated me periodically with pictures. They baked the buns with four boxes of bread, two for each half, and combined eight pounds of ground turkey (ironic?) to make the patty. Then it was time to dig in.

As you can see, the burger turned into quite the hot mess.

While we’re on the subject of the fattest foods ever, let take a trip on down to Taco Town!

Happy eating everyone!

Lough quotes

This is my first quarter with James Lough and I’m learning that he is a very interesting man. For those of you who are unaware, Dr. Lough is the chair of the writing department here at SCAD. He is teaching my Writing for the Arts I class this quarter.

His utterances are often startling and thought-provoking. For that reason, I’ve decided to compile a list of his quotes:

  • “Austrians are just Germans in drag.”
  • “There was a middle-aged, overweight woman in a polyester smock, fingers blackened from gambling, holding margarine tubs full of coins, licking her lips.” – On a woman he’d seen in a casino in Reno
  • “Jim Morrison performs like a snake having sex.”
  • “I was seduced by a parrot.”
  • “Jean stayed on his side. He was as embarrassed as I was. It was kind of cute.”

Many more to come. If you have any of your own Lough quotes, post them here.
